Photoshop Tutorial: Make High-Fashion Face Paint

In the realm of fashion photography, face paint has emerged as a powerful tool for creating striking and unique looks. By using brushes, masks, and other techniques in Adobe Photoshop, you can transform someone’s face into a canvas for artistic expression.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • A high-resolution image of a model’s face
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • A variety of brushes, including soft round brushes, glitter brushes, and the Curvature Pen tool
  • A selection of colors for your face paint

Step 2: Prepare the Image

  1. Open the image of the model’s face in Photoshop.
  2. Create a new layer for your face paint by clicking the “Create a new layer” icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
  3. Set the blend mode of the new layer to “Multiply”. This will make the paint look like it’s blending into the skin.

Step 3: Design the Face Paint

  1. Choose the Brush tool (B).
  2. Set the brush tip to “Soft round” and the opacity to a high setting. You can adjust the brush size using the [ and ] keys.
  3. Begin painting your design onto the model’s face. Use a variety of colors and techniques to create a unique and dramatic look.

Step 4: Add Glitter

  1. Import a glitter brush into Photoshop. You can find a variety of glitter brushes online or create your own.
  2. Choose a blue color for the glitter.
  3. Paint the glitter onto the model’s cheeks and nose using the glitter brush.

Step 5: Fix the Face Paint

  1. Create a layer mask for the face paint layer.
  2. Select the Brush tool and set the brush color to black.
  3. Paint over areas of the face paint that you want to hide, such as the eyes, hair, and fingers. This will allow the original image to show through.

Step 6: Enhance the Style

  1. Apply a layer style to the face paint layer. You can use a variety of layer styles, such as “Stroke” or “Inner Shadow”, to add depth and dimension to the paint.
  2. Experiment with different layer styles to achieve the desired look.

Step 7: Refine the Details

  1. Use the Curvature Pen tool to create precise shapes and lines in the face paint.
  2. Set the mode of the Curvature Pen tool to “Path” and the path operation to “Exclude Overlapping Shapes”.
  3. Click to add points for a curved path and double-click to create corners.
  4. Click on the original point to close the path.
  5. With the path defined, right-click and choose “Make Selection”.
  6. Set the feather radius to 4 pixels.
  7. Select the Brush tool and set the brush color to black.
  8. Paint inside the selection to conceal the face paint.

Step 8: Export Your Creation

  1. Save your Photoshop file as a PSD or JPEG file.
  2. You can then share your creation with others or use it in your own projects.
