Photoshop Tutorial: How to Create an Exploding Portrait

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create an exploding portrait in Adobe Photoshop. You will learn how to use the 3D Mesh tool to create the explosion, and how to use layers and masks to create a realistic effect.

What you will need:

Step 1: Create the base image

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop and create a new document.
  2. If you have a high-resolution image of a person, drag it into the document.
  3. If you don’t have a high-resolution image of a person, you can use the Lasso tool to select a person from another image.
  4. Copy and paste the person into the new document.

Step 2: Create the explosion mesh

  1. Select the person layer.
  2. Go to 3D > New Mesh from Layer > Depth Map To Mesh.
  3. Select the Sphere as the mesh type.
  4. Click on the OK button.

Step 3: Adjust the 3D Mesh

  1. In the 3D Viewport, you can use the Move, Scale, and Rotate tools to adjust the position, size, and rotation of the explosion mesh.
  2. You can also use the Bend and Twist tools to add more detail to the explosion.

Step 4: Create the explosion layers

  1. Select the explosion mesh.
  2. Go to 3D > Convert to 3D Object > Mesh.
  3. Copy and paste the mesh layer.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create more explosion layers.

Step 5: Adjust the explosion layers

  1. Select the explosion layers.
  2. Go to Layer Style > Bevel and Emboss.
  3. Adjust the settings of the Bevel and Emboss layer style to create a realistic explosion effect.

Step 6: Add a background

  1. Create a new layer below the explosion layers.
  2. Fill the new layer with a dark color.
  3. Add a layer mask to the new layer.
  4. Use a soft brush to paint out the parts of the background that you don’t want to show.

Step 7: Adjust the final image

  1. Adjust the opacity and blending mode of the explosion layers to create the desired effect.
  2. Add any other adjustments that you want to make to the image, such as contrast, brightness, and color.

Your exploding portrait is now complete!
