Lightroom Tutorial: Edit a Landscape Photo with Linear Gradient Adjustments

Landscape photography is a beautiful art form that captures the natural beauty of the world around us. However, sometimes landscape photos can be a bit flat or lacking in contrast. Linear gradient adjustments in Lightroom can be a great way to add depth and dimension to your landscape photos.

What is a Linear Gradient?

A linear gradient is a tool in Lightroom that allows you to apply different adjustments to different parts of your photo. This is particularly useful for landscape photos, as it allows you to brighten the foreground, darken the sky, and add a subtle vignette to the edges of the frame.

How to Apply a Linear Gradient

To apply a linear gradient to your landscape photo, follow these steps:

  1. Open your landscape photo in Lightroom.
  2. Go to the Gradient panel on the right side of the screen.
  3. Click on the Add Gradient button.
  4. Click on the starting point of the gradient in your photo. This is typically the bottom of the frame.
  5. Drag the mouse to the ending point of the gradient. This is typically the top of the frame.
  6. Adjust the sliders in the Gradient panel to make your desired adjustments.
  • Exposure: This slider will adjust the brightness of the gradient.
  • Contrast: This slider will adjust the contrast of the gradient.
  • Highlights: This slider will adjust the brightness of the highlights in the gradient.
  • Shadows: This slider will adjust the brightness of the shadows in the gradient.
  • Whites: This slider will adjust the brightness of the whites in the gradient.
  • Blacks: This slider will adjust the brightness of the blacks in the gradient.
  1. Click on the Pin button next to the slider that you want to adjust independently.
  2. Click and drag on the pin to adjust the slider for that specific part of the gradient.
  3. Repeat
